A photographic explanation for the lack of surprise at his autism spectrum diagnosis

But, hey. He got an award--for classroom improvement!--and he went up and took it, high-fiving the (male) teacher (who I want him to have for fourth grade) who handed it to him. Last year, he refused to even go up and get the award in the first place. Baby steps, right?

Besides. Makes for an adorable, postable-on-my-blog-since-you-can't-see-his-face photo, so it's a win-win, methinks.

(And I know I haven't actually written about his diagnosis--PDD, to be specific--nor about the first part of his IEP, which was held earlier this week. It's just overwhelming. Not the diagnosis or the IEP per se, but life right now. And sifting through everything to get to the relevant information takes energy I just do not seem to have. I'll try. Soon. I will try.)

Edited to add following photo, of N before the award, surrounded by classmates, jacket over his head, and hat over it. Sorta makes me want to cry. But if there's anything that tells you things still aren't quite right in his world...

Well, congrats on the award, anyway!

I am right there with you on the life being overwhelming and to much energy required to pull together the right bits and pieces. So much going on and no time to process and write about it all.

Feh. I fgiure the people that really love us (and our kids) will stick around for the stories when we eventually share them. I hope.

Of course I can wait, but when you do win the energy lottery :), I'd love to hear how the IEP went. I know it was only the first part, but I've been wondering how it was all going.

Congrats to N on his award!

Hi. You don't know me but I found your blog somehow and I feel an affinity for you. So, I hope that you don't mind a comment.

The photos of your son and your words left me with a smile and the thought "at least he is there with his class and up there accepting his award." And isn't that sometimes a success in itself for our children?

Bravo for N.

Michele, I NEVER mind a comment! And yes, you're right. Last year, he wouldn't even get up...ran over to me and hid behind me.

Of course, this success may have been because I had a couldn't-miss meeting at work and wasn't there to hide behind, but... ;-)

Thanks for posting this much. I hope the next IEP meeting sets up appropriate learning supports to allow N to continue to make great progress. I know it has been so hard to get the school to recognize his needs and hope you are well on your way.

That's so TH. Except he'd be underneath some article of furniture, too.
